The Area

Castles, wetlands and woodland on the doorstep — Bristol and the Cotswolds an easy drive.

A brilliant base

Between the Cotswolds and the Severn

Faraway Barn sits in the quiet countryside near Berkeley, on the western edge of the Cotswolds and close to the Severn Vale.

You're surrounded by footpaths and farmland, yet ten minutes from the M5 (Junction 14) — so it's just as easy to stay put for the weekend as it is to be at a castle, a wetland or a city by late morning. Here are some of our favourite things to do nearby.

Minutes away

Right on the doorstep

Berkeley Castle & Jenner's House — 5 min

One of England's most remarkable family homes, lived in by the Berkeley family for over 900 years, with sweeping gardens and a butterfly house. Next door, the home of Dr Edward Jenner — where the world's first vaccine was created.

WWT Slimbridge — 15 min

Sir Peter Scott's world-famous Wetland Centre on the Severn estuary — hides, wild birds, otters and family trails. A wonderful day out in any season.

Thornbury — 15 min

A handsome market town with independent shops, cosy pubs and cafés, plus the Tudor splendour of Thornbury Castle. Ideal for a relaxed lunch and a wander.

Walks & the outdoors

Big skies and bigger walks

The Cotswold Way & Wotton-under-Edge — 20 min

The 102-mile National Trail runs along the nearby escarpment, with far-reaching views from North Nibley and the Tyndale Monument — a proper leg-stretch with a reward at the top.

Westonbirt, the National Arboretum — 35 min

Thousands of trees, a treetop walkway, spring blossom and spectacular autumn colour. Especially magical as the seasons turn.

Forest of Dean & Wye Valley — 45 min

Ancient woodland, cycle trails, the dramatic Wye Valley and the romantic ruins of Tintern Abbey — over the Severn bridges and well worth the drive.

Outdoor dining with views over the fields

Cities & days out

Culture, when you want it

Bristol — 30 min

Harbourside, street art, the SS Great Britain and the Clifton Suspension Bridge — a vibrant city of food and culture, without having to stay in the thick of it.

Gloucester — 25 min

A magnificent cathedral (familiar from the Harry Potter films) and the revived Victorian docks at Gloucester Quays, with waterside shopping and dining.

Bath — 1 hour

The Roman Baths, honey-stone Georgian crescents and world-class restaurants make this UNESCO city an unforgettable day trip.
